THE TEMPORAL BONES
The temporal bones are situated on the lateral sides it is attached to the sphenoid bone in front the parietal bones above and the occipital bone behind
At the base of the skull in front of the occipital bone there is sphenoid bone its shape is like that of a bird called bat it has a body that is situated in the midline from which projects outwards two greater wings and two lesser wings the body is hollow and contains two large size sinuses the body houses pituitary gland
The ethmoid bone is cubical in shape it fills the space between the two orbits there are number of holes in it through which the branches of the nerve of smell (olfactory) pass from the nose to the brain
The facial bones:; they form the lower part of the front of the skull.there are fourteen facial bones which include 2 maxillae 2 palatine 2 nasal 2 zygomatic (check bones) 2 lachrymal 2 turbinates 1 vomer and 1 mandible
The maxilla forms the upper jaw and the major portion of the palate the upper set of teeth are fixed in it the maxilla is a large irregular bone the body at the maxilla is hollow and contains the important maxillary sinus or antrum it communicates with the middle meatus of the nose through a small aperture inflammation within the nose resulting from a common cold may spread to the maxillary sinus so that the cavity becomes filled with mucus causing discomfort is this area this is known as sinusitis
The nasal bones are two small bones situated in between the sockets of the eyes (orbits) they form the upper hard ridge of the nose lachrymal bones are the smallest and fragile turbinate bones which are spongy and curved project from the outer wall of the nasal cavities vomer is a thin vertical bone which separates the nasal cavity the zygomatic bones or check bones are two most prominent bones of the cheeks they unite with the maxillae in front mandible or the lower jaw is the largest bone of the face which fixes in its respective sockets the lower set of teeth it is the only movable bone of the skull
