 THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN;;


IT consists of a series of vertebrae and forms the axis to which other bones of the skeleton are connected the skull is situated on the pivot at the top of the vertebral column which is situated posteriorly on the central axis the sacrum of the vertebral column forms a part of the pelvis which forms the lower end of the axis there are 33 vertebrae amongst which which upper 24 are movable the first 7vertebrae of the neck are known as cervical vertebrae the next 12 of the chest region are known as thoracic vertebrae the remaining 5 vertebrae of the loin region are known as lumbar vertebrae the lowest 5 fused vertebrae form a wedgeshape structure known as sacrum the end portion of the vertebral column is known as coccyx in which 4 vertebrae are fused together the coccyx represents remnant of the tail of the monkey in man this indicates that man has evolved from the monkey
