 MUSCLES OF THE NECK

There are four sets of muscles situated in the neck
1. the platysma muscle is a thin broad band of muscle situated under the skin on the lateral surface of the neck it depresses the jaws and wrinkles the skin of the neck 
2. the sternomastoid muscle stretches from mastoid process and gets inserted between the clavicle and the sternum below when both the muscles contract the head is thrown back and when one contracts the head is turned to that side 
3. the hyoid muscles:: these are the muscles situated above the hyoid bone there are four muscles :(a) the biventer cervices (b) the mylohyoid (c) the geniohyoid (d) the stylohyoid these muscles are involved in the movement of the hyoid bone larynx and to some extent the jaw 
4. capitis muscles: longus capitis oblique capitis rectus capitis splenius capitis semispinalis capitis and longissimus capitis these muscles are situated in the deeper part of the neck originating from the cervical vertebrae and inserted in the skull bones these muscles are involved in flexion and extension of the head
