Agranulocytes:
They have no granules and are mononuclear they are of 4 varieties:
(1) small lymphocytes
(2) Large lymphocytes
(3) monocytes
(4) transitional
Lymphocytes: There are two varieties: The small and the large one .The small one measures 8-10u whereas the large one 10-15u in size the small lymphocytes are about 25% of the total WBC whereas the large ones are 3 to 5% only lymphocytes take up a blue stain in small lymphocyte the nucleus almost occupies the whoale cell leaving a thin rim of cytoplasm
The large lymphocyte has larger size with more cytoplasm and the nucleus takes up a blue stain
Monocytes:: The large monocyte measures about 18u in diameter amongst the WBCs they are the largest in size they take up a faint blue stain the nucleus is eccentric and lightly stained as compared to the large lymphocyte it is notched on its inner side the nucleus bears a vesicular appearance they are about 2-4% of WBC they represent the part of reticulo- endothelial system (RES)
Transitional : they are midway between a large lymphocyte and large monocytes they are horse shoe-shaped and represent large mononuclear cells
