HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 WHITE BLOOD CELLS OR LEUCOCYTES

White blood cells (WBC) are also called Leucocytes unlike the RBC the WBC has a nucleus but no haemoglobin there are sub types of WBC"s they total about 8000(4000-11000) per cmm of blood as against 5 millions per cmm of RBC Thus the ratio of WBC to RBC is 1;600
WBC's are of two types 1.Granular WBC and 2.Agranular WBC The granular ones have granules in their cytoplasm and a nucleus which is multi -lobed Agranular WBC's are without granules in their cytoplasm and the nucleus is not lobed
The granular leucocytes are of three types:(1) Neutrophils (Polymorphs) (2) Acidophils (Eosinophils) and (3) Basophils
Neutrophils or polymorphs: They are stained with neutral dyes Therefore they are also named as neutrophils Nucleus of the cell has 2-5 lobes and the cytoplasm has fine granules and it takes up violet colour Neutrophils represent about 65-70% of the WBC Their size is 10-12u
Eosinophils: They take up acid stain and so are named acidophils its nucleus has usually two lobes only and cytoplasm has coarse granules which take up dark red colour Normally they are 2-4% of the total WBC Their size is 10-12u
Basophils: They are stained with basic dyes the granules are coarse as in eosinophils but they stain blue They are very rare representing 0.5% of the total WBC their size is 8-10u
