Pharmacological Action::
Prostaglandins produce variety of effects and different types of prostaglandins produce different effects in different organs which may differ from species to species
Cardiovascular System::
In most of the species PGE and PGA potent vasodilators and produce fall in blood pressure They increase cardiac output PGF2 produces vasoconstriction
Smooth muscles ::
PGF2a produces bronchoconstriction whereas PGE1 produces bronchodilation these prostaglandins also contract gastrointestinal tract muscles and increase peristalsis
Reproductive System ::
Most of the prostaglandins cause myomertrial contraction of the uterus local vasoconstriction and loss of endometrium prostaglandins are increased in dysmenorrhoea PGE and PGF contract the uterus in late pregnancy prostaglandin levels are increased and may induce labour they are used as ecbolics to induce labour in second and third trimester for therapeutic abortion some prostaglandins also have luteolytic action and may find a use as contraceptives
In male reproductive ststem they may have possible role in vasodilatation of genital tract they are present in semen and aid the sperm transport by stimulating smooth muscles of female genital tract locally and via circulation through vaginal absorption
