HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 DISORDER OF IMMUNE SYSTEM

ACQUIRED-IMMUNO- DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)

AIDS is a condition characterised by a defect in cell-mediated immunity there are two types of lymphocytes involved in the immune mechanisms of the body-b-cell and T-cells the B-cells are eventually involved in the production of antibodies whereas T- cells function as cytotoxic or killer cells and kill the cells by direct contact in AIDS T-cells are few in number and this is because of a retrovirus Human T-lymphotrophic virus Type III

Thus AIDS is a communicable disease caused by a virus that lowers down the immunity of the blood and then the body such that the patient dies within a few months a death La Miserable

        Clinical features of AIDS:

1.Persistent lymphadenopathy diarrhoea mild muco-cutaneous infection (herpes.candida or warts)
2.Fever of unknown origin
3. Sweat malaise lethargy anorexia nausea myalgia arthralgia headache sore-throat and thrombocytopenia
4. pheumocystitis carcnii pneumonia
5.Malignancy
It is not necessary that all the clinical features should be present even if there are two symptoms one can suspect the possibility of AIDS and one must resort to a stepwise diagnosis of AIDS
First step is to identify if the patient belong to a group at higher risks at getting AIDS Epidemiological data indicates that following groups are at the higher risks of AIDS:
