HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

The Venous System (part 02) ::

The common iliac veins are formed by the union of internal iliac and external iliac The external iliac is the continuation of femoral vein from lower limb The femoral vein extends from popliteal vein (of the knee) to the external iliac in the thigh region popliteal vein is formed by the union of anterior and posterior tibial veins of the lower limbs both these veins are deep veins in addition there is great saphenous vein that runs superficially in the leg region from foot to femoral vein The blood from the foot is collected by darsal venous arch
The inferior vena cava is some what compressed during the later stages of pregnancy due to enlargement of the uterus This produces edema of the ankles and feet and temporary varicose veins
In cases of heart failure the venous pressure in the right atrium may rise in such patients the pressure in the column of blood in the external jugular vein may rise so the external jugular vein can be seen visibly distended
