HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 SALIVARY GLANDS::

There are three pairs of major salivary glands :(1) parotid (2) Submaxillary or submandibular and (3) sublingual their ducts open inside in the oral cavity of the mouth

1.Parotid Glands::

These are situated in the front and a part of it is below each ear it is a serous type of gland which secretes ptyalin the duct opens into the cheek of the mouth on either side

2.Submaxiliary or Submandibular Glands::

They are situated at the bottom of the mouth on either side These are seromucous i.e mixed glands their ducts open on the tongue

3. Sublingual Glands:

These are situated below the tongue and are also of a mixed nature their main duct opens by the side of frenulumlinguae which is the thin partition that binds the tongue to the base the nerve supply to these glands are from the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves
    Histologically salivary glands are tubulo-alveolar exocrine glands each gland consists of lobules made up of alveoli and the supporting connective tissue forming interlobular septum when seen in section it shows ducts and alveoli Alveoli contain secretory cells that may be of two types serous and mucous former type secretes watery clear fluid and the later secretes mucous type of fluid Nucleus of the serous secretory cells is round and lies near the base of the cell while that of mucous cells is flat and lies towards the base
    Parotid gland consists entirely of serous cells sublingual salivary gland is predominantly of mucous type whereas submandibular or submaxillary gland is mixed type of gland but in man it is predominantly of the serous type
