 MOVEMENTS OF SMALL INTESTINE::

The movements of small intestine are important to mix the chyme with digestive juices absorption of digested food and to propel the chyme further three types of movements are seen in small intestine
    1. Peristalsis: it is a wave of contraction preceeded by the wave of relaxation this movement helps in propelling the chyme further in jejunum and ileum the speed of peristalsis is 1.2 cm/sec to2-25 cm/sec this type of movement is initiated by neurogenic drive
        2. Segmentation:In this type of movement circular muscles contract at regular intervals thus dividing the intestine into number of segments this is followed by another rhythmic contractions this type of movement helps in mixing of food with digestive juices and absorption of digested food the movement occurs by myogenic drive
        3. Pendular : This movement is similar to segmentation but here segments move to and fro over the food in the pendular fashion at the rate of 5 cm/sec like segmentation this type of movement also helps in mixing of food with digestive juices and absorption of the digested food
