monosaccharides are the simplest sugars which cannot be hydrolyzed further into other simpler sugars their general formula is CnH2aOn they are crystalline compounds freely soluble in water and hot alcohol and insoluble in organic solvents viz ether acetone etc They are optically active Depending on the number of carbon atoms they are classified as trioses tetroses pentoses hexoses etc Out of these pentoses and hexoses are of physiological importance as
