HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

PHYSIOLOGY OF THE LIVER (PART02)

3.FAT METABOLISM::

1.Fats are synthesised and stored in the liver
2.Oxidisation of fats by beta oxidation takes place in the liver
3.fats are also synthesised from proteins and carbohydrates in the liver
4.The liver is the centre for formation of ketones

4.Synthesis of Vitamins::

1.Carotene is transformed into vit A in the liver
2.vit A and vit D are stored in the liver
3.Synthesis of prothrombin with the help of vit K also takes place in the liver
4.Vit B12 and folic acid (PGA) are stored for haempoesis in liver

5.manufacture of bile::

Bile salts namely sodium taurocholate and glycocholate are synthesised in the liver from cysteine and glycine respectively with cholic acid it carries the pigment bilirubin and biliverdin which are transported from the spleen and transfered to gall bladder

6.Functions Related to Blood::

1.In foetal life RBCs are manufactured in the liver
2.Blood coagulating factors that are supplied by the liver they are:
a.Prothrombin (Ref.Vit.K)
b.Fibrinogen for clotting of blood are transported to blood plasma
c. Heparin that is synthesised from the mast cells of the liver and transported to blood plasma as an anticoagulant to retard intravascular clotting of the blood
3.The liver stores the blood which is squeezed out in emergency to normalise blood volume
4. Iron vit B12 and folic acid are stored in the liver and transferred to bone marrow via blood as required
5.The liver manufactures albumin globulin fibrinogen and other plasma proteins and transports them to blood plasma
