HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 THE LIMBIC SYSTEM :::

It is an integrated network concerned with emotions and includes the thalamus hypothalamus septal area hippocampus amygdala part of the Reticular Formation in the brain stem and the limbic region of the cerebral cortex
                    The emotional changes such as love hate envy revenge selfishness and altruism etc are controlled by this system The stimulation of limbic system also produces visceral somatic and endocrinal changes lesions to the amygdaloid nucleus causes hypersexuality and hyperphagia in animals

The limbic system also serves as the biological clock and is concerened with the diurnal variations in short the limbic system acts as a sort of system for emotional homeostasis as it recognises disturbances of equilibrium resulting from hunger or sex drive a danger or threat or a less tangible worry or disappointment The emotional tag that the limbic system places on such mental or behavioural upsets helps the higher brain (cerebrum) to recognize the problems and take steps to restore proper equilibrium
