THE RETICULAR FORMATION :::
It is diffused and ill defined mass of nerve cells that passes through the upper portion of the spinal cord brain stem and diencephalon (i.e.thalamus and hypothalamus ) The chief function of this mass is to co-ordinate muscle activity and the cerebral cortex via wakefulness center in the hypothalamus
The Recticular formation consists of the ascending reticular activating system and descending reticular activating system The ascending reticular activating system (RAS) is concerned with wakefulness and over all control of degree of activities visual and auditory impulses are relayed here the descending reticular activating system consists of descending inhibitory reticular projections which have the control over the movements that are produced voluntarily or reflexly
