            PITUITARY GLAND ::

Anatomy ::

It is known as Hypophysis-cerebri gland It is situated in the sella turcica of the cranium It is hanging from the centre of base of brain It is of the size of a big bean 


The pituitary gland is divided into three parts ::
1.Pars anterior or Anterior pituitary 
2.Pars intermedia 
3.Pars posterior or Posterior pituitary 

Pars-anterior or Anterior pituitary ::

It consists of three types of cells ::
1.Acidophilic cells ::These cells are stained with the acidic dyes and secrete growth hormone or somatotrophin and prolactin 
2.Basophilic cells : These cells are stained with the basic dyes They secrete Thyrotrophic or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and the Gonadotrophic hormones namely follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Leutenising hormone (LH) 


3.Chromophobe cells : These cells do not take up any stain They secrete Adrenocorticotrophic hormone or adrenal cortex stimulating hormone (ACTH)
