DISORDERS OF THE EAR ::
IMPAIRED HEARING ::
Conduction Deafness ::
Conduction deafness is caused by injury or disease of the external or middle ear A ruptured ear drum otitis media or otosclerosis can cause conduction deafness Otosclerosis is a condition in which the ossicles of the middle ear do not move freely and therefore cannot transmit the sound waves into the oval window Large amount of wax in the ear canal can also impair hearing This wax can be removed by the doctor Attempts on the part of the patient to clean the wax out of his ear will most likely result in pushing the wax further into the ear and may damage the tympanic membrane Regardless of the cause of conduction deafness it can usually be corrected by repairing the defect or by using a hearing aid hearing aids do not improve ability to hear but make sounds louder
Nerve deafness ::
Nerve deafness involves damage in the labrynth or in the auditory nerve It cannot be helped by a hearing aid Patients can be taught lip reading
Old Age Deafness ::
old age deafness is fairly common in elderly people in this type of deafness a person hears some words and messages but not others He is able to hear low pitched sounds much better than high pitch sounds He may also have problems in hearing certain consonants This is not a psychological disorder it is wrong to imply that such an elderly person hears only what he wants to hear One should never shout at such a patient since he is of course sensitive about his hearing problem if you should you will very likely elevate the pitch of your voice and make your words more difficult to hear One should repeat his message in a lower pitch if this does not help one might keep his pitch low and rephrase the message so as to eliminate the consonants that are causing problems
