HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 Functions of thyroid gland ::

1.Calorigenic:Thyroid hormones increase oxygen uptake calorie production and basal metabolic rate (BMR)
2.Metabolism : They stimulate the carbohydrate and protein metabolism and mobilise Ca+2 and PO4-3 from the bone

3.Growth:Thyroid hormones also stimulate growth
4.Mammary Glands:Milk -secretion and fat -content are increased by thyroid hormones
5.Heart : Heart rate is increased by direct action of these hormones Hence tachycardia and palpitation are the common signs of hyperthyroidism
6.Kidney : Thyroid hormones act as diuretic and excrete nitrogenous end products like creatinine and salts by stimulating metabolism
7.Release of Calcitonin: It is a polypeptide hormone produced by the para follicular cells of thyroid gland it lowers the concentration of calcium ions in the blood and causes deposition of calcium in bones
