HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

 VAS DEFERENS ::

Seminiferous tubules unite to form rete testes from where arise vasa-efferentia or efferent ductule Vasa-efferentia form epididymis which continues further as a tube like structure called vas-deferens Vas-deferens enters the pelvic part of the abdomen to enter into the prostatic part of the urethra Here it is joined by a duct called ejaculatory duct It receives the secretions from the prostate gland seminal vesicles prostaticus and Cowpers gland or bulbo -urethral gland The secretions of these parts form the major portion of semen

Seminal vesicles ::

Seminal vesicles are secretory glands which form most of the semen-secretion The secretion contains fructose prostaglandins and clotting proteins which are different from that found in blood one of the main protein is semenogelin that causes coagulation of semen after ejaculation Prostaglandins were initially thought to be secreted from prostate gland but later it was found in seminal vesicles To this is added the spermatozoa from testes and the seminal secretion from prostate it also secretes prostaglandin that can cause contraction of the uterus

Prostate ::

Prostate is a dough nut -like secretory gland with lobes it gives out a nutritive secretion for spermatozoa This gland is situated at the opening of the bladder into the urethra The urethra pierces through the prostate Thus the Prostatic part of the urethra has the opening of the ejaculatory duct of vas-deferens and also the openings of seminal vesicles The milky acidic fluid secreted from prostate gland contains ionized critic acid that is used by spermatozoa for ATP production It also contains several proteolytic enzymes such as prostate -specific antigen (PSA) Pepsinogen lysozyme amylase and hyaluronidse Some of these enzymes liquify coagulated semen PSA is used as a marker to diagnose prostate cancer Secretion from prostate also contain acid phosphates whose function is not known
        prostate gland is actively concerned with the sex act by contributing its gluey secretion of semen at the time of ejaculation
