HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTION OF MINERALOCORTICOIDS (Aldosterone ):::

Aldosterone has potent effect on mineral and water metabolism (and hence known as mineralocorticoid ) It produces retention of NaCl and water thereby increases blood volume and blood pressure in addition it also increases the excretion of K+ and PO4-3 Aldosterone increases blood pressure by vasoconstriction
Aldosterone may also produce other effects as produced by glucocorticoids however it is less potent in those effects
    The secretion of aldosterone is regulated through the renin angiotensin system Refer page 138 Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) also regulates to some extent the release of aldosterone

Physiological actions of Sex-steroids ::

Sex differentiation in foetus is controlled by sex hormones of the corticosteroids It also affects sex-development and growth as well as secondary sex characteristics Attraction for opposite sex i.e. libido is also due in part to the sex hormone of corticosteroids The details of the individual sex hormones are described

Relationship of Adrenal medulla with Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)::

Adrenal medulla is many a times wrongly described as the part of ANS This is of course due to adrenaline that is released from this gland and most physiological actions of adrenaline are similar to the stimulation of sympathetic Nervous System Adrenal medulla is an endocrine gland is rather innervated by parasympathetic nerves
