MALARIA ::
It is a protozoal disease caused by parasites of the genus plasmodium There are four types of plasmodium parasites namely falciparum vivax ovale and malariae responsible for malaria out of them vivax and falciparum account for almost all the cases
The disease is carried from man to man by female of certain species of anopheles mosquito In India more than 250 kinds of mosquitoes are known most of them are found in forest and marshy places
There are mainly three factors involved in the transmission of the disease namely parasite vector and host It is a worldwide disease and it is a primary public health problem in the tropical and sub tropical countries Anopheles the vector of malaria in india breed in clean and slow moving or stationary water of rivers irrigation canals cesspools gardens water storage vessels overhead tanks etc
Mosquitoes ::
Mosquito passes through four stages during its development egg larva pupa and adult The first three stages pass in water and in the last state the adult mosquito flies out in the air Anopheles female mosquito helps in transmission of malaria while culex mosquito helps in transmission of filariasis The distinguishing character of anopheles and culex mosquitoes has been summarised
