THREADWORM (Oxyuris vermicularis)::
This worm produces infection in children It is very small in size as compared to roundworm The male is 0.4 cm to 0.6 cm long and female is 0.8 cm to 1.2 cm in length Adult worm develops from ova in about three weeks
The eggs enter in the intestine through mouth by taking contaminated food shells of the eggs dissolve in the intestine and larvae come out and enter in the caecum The female moves towards the anus and lay eggs These eggs produce infection in man within 12 to 36 hours The host gets re infection through contamination of fingers The worms produce severe irritation near the anus enuresis convulsions cough and restlessness They also produce infection in the vagina in female
Preventive Measures ::
For preventing the spread of the disease we should take following steps ::
1.Auto-infection should be prevented by keeping nails well trimmed and clean
2.Hands should be washed with soap before meals after the toilet
3.Ammoniated mercury ointment may be applied in perineal area to kill the worms if there is irritation and itching
4. Infected children should be isolated and treated till completely cured of infection
