RODENTS ::
They are hazardous to human health and also cause great damage to food buildings and other things They are of two types the wild and domestic varieties The diseases caused by rodents are as follows :
Bacterial : Tularaemia plague salmonellosis
Viral : Lassa fever haemorrhagic fever encephalitis
Rickettsial : Scrub typhus murine typhus rickettsial pox
Parasitic : H. diminuta leishmaniasis amoebiasis
Others : Rat bite fever leptospirosis histoplasmosis ring worm
The mode of transmission is either directly through rat bite or by contaminated food or water Rat harbours rat fleas which can transmit plague and typhus .
Antirodent measures ::
1.Sanitation measures :: if food water and shelter is denied to rats by environmental sanitation their density decreases Garbage should be properly stored collected and disposed food stuffs should be properly stored Rat burrows should be destroyed
2.Trapping :: It causes temporary reduction in number of rats A wonder trap has been developed by Haffkin Institute Mumbai which can trap 25 rats at a time The captured rats should be destroyed
