Modes by which HIV is not transmitted ::
It is important to note and convince people that HIV infection is not transmitted through casual contact such as shaking of hands hugging dry kissing sneezing coughing mosquito bite toilet sharing sharing of telephones playing together travelling together donative blood asepticaly etc mosquito bite does not spread infection because the stomach of mosquito secretes a chemical that digests HIV viruses Further it takes 72 hours before a mosquito bites a person again
Stages of progression of AIDS ::
There are four stages of progression of HIV infection They have been illustrated in as seen in the figure for most stages symptoms of other diseases are seen further pattient may be asymptomatic for a period of 5-6 years and this is known as window period During this period one can spread the infection
Preventive measures against AIDS ::
AIDS has reached epidemic proportions in the united states since the first case was reported in 1981 The numbers of AIDS cases are increasing of those patients who have been diagnosed for three years or more 85% have died The problem has challenged the best talents and imagination of virology much progress been made on such a complex disease in so short a time AIDS cases are increasing at an exponential rate in the united states and the rest of the world
A person having HIV infection may remain asymptomatic for 6-8 years and during this period he she is capable of transmitting infection to others This stage must be identified at the earliest to prevent the spread This can be done by detecting the presence of antibodies by serological tests (Elisa or western Blot ) This is thus the first and foremost measure to prevent spread of AIDS
