A.Control of sexual intercourse ::
There are two methods ::
1.Withdrawal method ::
Here the penis is withdrawn from the vagina just before the discharge of semen i.e. (orgasm)
This method imply avoidance of discharge of seman in vagina by early withdrawal or mental inhibition or by obstruction of passage it may give rise to psychic disturbances and so it should be given up
2.Rhythm method for female ::
For those who do not want family planning appliances this method is useful though not fool -proof woman has to avoid inter-course few days before and after ovulation ovulation occurs nearly on 14 th prior to start of menstruation Thus with a menstrual cycle of 28 days ovulation occurs somewhere on the 14 th day from the beginning of the period This implies that first week after period and the week just before the next period are safe from family planning point of view the mid 10 days are dangerous Refer the following charts
This natural method is not fool -proof as the length of cycle may vary In general days just after menstruation and just before the menstruation are safest days i.e. the week before and after the menstruation are Safe approximately for exactness refer however 10-20 days from first day of period are the days with the possibility of fertilization 13-14-15 day fertility chances are maximum and therefore very dangerous from FP point of view
Rhythmic method based on Body Temperature ::
In this method the woman keeps daily record of her body temperature Body temperature falls before ovulation and rises after ovulation A woman avoids intercourse from 5th day after menstruation is over to until 3 days after the rise in body temperature as determined by using a special thermometer each morning
Another method for the woman is to avoid intercourse each month until 3 days after the rise in body temperature During this period the woman or man can if necessary use other methods of contraception such as the diapharagm or condom The temperature method used along with the calender method is more effective than the calender method used alone
Merit : no artificial device needed
Demerits :: 1.Requires careful recording of danger zone
2.Inhibition during danger -zone day since sexual intercourse has to be avoided during that period
