The description about drugs or preparations are given in the pharmacopoeia The pharmacopoeias are a class of drug compendia The term pharmacopoeia is derived from two greek words pharmakon means a drug and poiein means make it is a book which contains the formula or other standards required for the preparation and testing of drugs to ensure uniform purity and potency it also describes storage instruction method of identification and standardization dose range etc Most of the nations have their own pharmacopoeia e.g. indian pharmacopoeia (I.P) British pharmacopoeia (B.P) United states pharmacopoeia (U.S.P) etc Besides pharmacopoeia National Formulary (NF) is also published to get drug information WHO has published international pharmacopoeia for those nations who do not have their own pharmacopoeia The pharmacopoeias are revised periodically Drugs included in the latest pharmacopoeia or national Formulary are considered as official The agents once included but rejected from the current editions are designated as unofficial The agents which were never included in any of these books are known as non official
