PHARMACOLOGY

 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES ::

(a) Neutralization ::

Substances like aluminium hydroxide neutralizes acid in the stomach and hence are used as antacids

(b) Chelation ::

It is another biochemical process for drawing out ions of heavy metals which may be toxic to the body Drugs like ethylenediamine teraacetic acid (EDTA) British Anti Lewisite (BAL) penicillamine etc are good chelating agents that can excrete out poisonous substances like lead arsenic mercury etc from the patient s body and spare him of their toxicity

(c) Oxidative Phosphorylation ::

In Krebs cycle oxygen is used to promote energy rich phosphate bonds The process involves coupling of two actions Drugs like barbiturates perhaps act by uncoupling the two processes This is called uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation

(d) Metabolism ::

An enzyme like trypsin digests proteins thrombokinase helps in clotting of blood and hyaluronidase increases cell permeability and facilitates quicker absorption Such enzymes can directly be used as drugs Some drugs act by inhibition of enzymes e.g. cholinesterase inhibitors like neostigmine
