TOXICITY IS CLASSIFIED ::
Toxicity is classified depending on duration of study For example acute toxicity occurs within 24 hours subacute toxicity takes days and chronic toxicity takes months All these however may follow a single dose or repeated doses In pharmacodynamic experiments acute toxicity is lethal toxicity which occurs in 24 hours
Latrogenic diseases ::
The word iatros means physician and thus diseases produced as a result of drug therapy by physician are termed as iatrogenic diseases or physician induced diseases Iatrogenic disease indicates a pathological syndrome Thus side effects produced by a drug cannot be called as iatrogenic disease Examples of iatrogenic diseases are Parkinsonism produced by reserpine or chlorpromazine Another example is hypertension and congestive cardiac failure produced by glucocorticosteroids Similarly peptic ulcer produced by glucocorticosteroids aspirin indomethacin etc is an iatrogenic disease Vigorous oxygen therapy in premature infant may produce retrolental fibroplasia There are number of examples for iatrogenic diseases Immunological renal hepatic blood and other toxicities produced can be designated as iatrogenic diseases
