Anthelminthics are used to expell worms from the bowels When drugs kill the worms they are called Vermicides and when they temporarily incapacitate them they are called Vermifuges The worms are later removed by purgation
An ideal anthelminthic should reach the site of infestation it preferably should not get absorbed and if absorbed it should not produce any toxic effect on the host it should be safe even for children it should cover a wide variety of worms and should have a high chemotherapeutic index that is it should be safe

एंथेल्मिन्थिक का उपयोग आंतों से कृमियों को बाहर निकालने के लिए किया जाता है। जब दवाएं कृमियों को मारती हैं तो उन्हें वर्मीसाइड कहा जाता है और जब वे उन्हें अस्थायी रूप से अक्षम कर देती हैं तो उन्हें वर्मीफ्यूज कहा जाता है। बाद में कृमियों को विरेचन द्वारा हटा दिया जाता है।
एक आदर्श कृमिनाशक को संक्रमण के स्थान पर पहुंचना चाहिए, यह अधिमानतः अवशोषित नहीं होना चाहिए और यदि अवशोषित हो जाता है तो यह मेजबान पर कोई विषाक्त प्रभाव नहीं पैदा करना चाहिए, यह बच्चों के लिए भी सुरक्षित होना चाहिए, इसमें कई प्रकार के कृमियों को शामिल किया जाना चाहिए और इसका उच्च कीमोथेरेप्यूटिक इंडेक्स होना चाहिए, अर्थात यह सुरक्षित होना चाहिए।
